The most famous of Buddhist goddesses, Tārā is known for her deep level of compassion and eternal quest to help those in need. She is the female counterpart of Avalokiteśvara. According to some origin stories, upon witnessing the suffering of countless beings Avalokiteśvara shed a tear of compassion from which Tara was born. She seeks to protect and guide followers in their journey to enlightenment. This statue depicts her as she reclines so she may observe the world peacefully, ready to jump into action should someone need her help.
