What is a kakefuton and how is it different from a regular comforter?

A kakefuton (掛け布団) is a traditional Japanese comforter that serves as the top layer of an authentic Japanese sleep system:

• Silk filling: Hand-pulled mulberry silk instead of down, feathers, or synthetic materials

• Custom Japanese fabrics: Imported textile removable covers in traditional patterns

• Two-piece system: Removable cover and silk duvet insert

• Temperature regulation: Natural breathability keeps you comfortable year-round

Why choose silk filling over down or synthetic fill?

Mulberry silk offers superior natural properties for sleep:

• Hypoallergenic: Naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and allergens

• Temperature regulating: Warm in winter, cool in summer without overheating

• Mildew-resistant: Natural proteins prevent mold and bacteria growth

• Breathability: Superior moisture-wicking compared to down or polyester

• Durability: Hand-pulled silk maintains loft longer than synthetic fills

• Clean sleep: No feather odors, no synthetic off-gassing

• Lightweight warmth: Provides insulation without heavy weight

• Breathability advantage: Warm without night sweats or overheating

• Middle layer: Shikifuton (cotton-filled floor mattress)

• Top layer: Kakefuton (mulberry silk-filled comforter)

• Optional additions: Buckwheat pillow, protective covers

• Daily ritual: Fold and store all layers to reclaim floor space

• Gradual building: Start with any component and add others over time
