How To Care For My Tatami & Shikifuton?

To extend the life of your tatami mat and shikifuton, we recommend regular, simple care.

For tatami mats, sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt. For minor stains, wipe gently with a damp cloth, brushing in the direction of the weave.

To keep your shikifuton fresh and supportive, regularly air it out in sunlight and flip or rotate it to maintain even wear. We recommend placing it on a tatami mat to promote airflow and provide proper support. If you don't have a tatami mat, be sure to fold and store the futon daily to prevent moisture buildup against the floor. Spot clean only with a damp cloth, never soak it. With consistent care, your shikifuton will offer lasting comfort for years to come.

We also recommend using a shikifuton protective cover to help extend the life of your futon. The cover can be easily removed and washed as needed.

How to wash my imported Japanese fabric?

For our cotton covers, we recommend washing in cold water and either tumble drying on a low setting or line drying. To preserve the fabric and prevent fading, line drying is best when possible. Avoid hot water and high heat, as they can cause shrinking and damage.

How to wash my silk bedding?

To wash your silk bedding, remove the cover by unzipping it and sliding it off the bedding item. Wash on a gentle cycle in cold water using a mild, chemical-free detergent (either by machine in a mesh bag, or by hand) and avoid mixing with rough fabrics that could snag the silk.

After washing, promptly remove the silk to prevent creasing and air-dry it flat or on a line, keeping out of direct sunlight.

For larger items like shikifuton or kakefuton covers, lay them flat to dry to avoid stretching the delicate fibers.

Please note: do not get the buckwheat hulls, or zabuton inserts wet, as moisture can damage the natural filling and lead to mold or deterioration.
