Very comfortable…my back health has improved so much. It’s high quality and you just have to remember to flip it so it gets even use and you get the most out of the cotton layers.
Decent, but stinky
I used to own a twin size J-life shikibuton and slept on it for about 3 years with positive results—that was around 10 years ago. When I moved states, it was damaged and I stayed in an apartment for a while that was already furnished, so I’ve moved back to mattresses for a while, getting a new one about once every two years because I can’t find a good one. Lately I wanted to come back to the shikibuton, so I got one from J-Life in queen size. As it came, it was lumpier than I remember my old one being, and the odor is quite strong. I gave this a month of letting it air out and fluff up in a spare bedroom before I slept on it. The lumpiness hasn’t really gone away, despite beating on it while it hung freely over some furniture, but sleeping on it a week or so, the lumpy spots have compressed enough that it’s not an issue. It’s absolutely fine as a side sleeper, but you do want something soft under it, like carpeting or tatami, so you don’t get pressure points on your hip and shoulders. I’m using tatami, also from J-Life, which is great. My main issue at this point is that this shikibuton really has a sharp, chemical smell, which I assume is the boron fire retardant that the cotton has been treated with. Pure cotton doesn’t smell like this. Granted, you don’t smell it as much when you have a cover or fitted sheet over the futon, but it’s definitely still there. It’s not pleasant…maybe you could say it’s a neutral odor, but I’m leaning toward slightly gross and unpleasant. I don’t remember it being this strong on my old shikibuton, but maybe I got used to it back then. Jury is still out if I can get used to it again, but after a month, it has not gone away.
Fantastic!
I love my new J-Life mattress!! Best sleep of my life!
Best sleep of my life
My husband and I have been sleeping on this futon for about 2 weeks now and we have both never slept better in our lives! The cover was definitely worth the investment as well since it is a thick and good quality cotton cover. We will never go back to sleeping on a traditional bed that’s for sure.
Wonderful
I'm using this bed in a Japanese themed room which I use for Zen meditation practice as well as on-line and solo retreats. I sleep on it a full night approximately once per week and will take naps here occasionally during the week. Purchased a 4 inch thick, twin XL Shikifuton with a solid white removable cover. I'm 6', 220lbs and something of a restless sleeper. I'm glad I selected the XL. This mattress is a perfect fit for me and my feline friend. This and the wonderful Kakefuton makes for a luxurious traditional Japanese bed. One thing of note. The J-Life website suggests the double size Kakefuton, however, I stuck with the single size and I was glad I did. The single has the lenth and quite a bit of overhang width wise. I worried that the double would have been too big. I purchased a pair of standard pillows and a matching bed roll from a big box store to complete the set. The shikifuton and kakefuton with covers was pretty expensive, however I'm very happy with the quality and comfort of the products as well as the sleeping experience. J-life was great. Would gladly recommend.
