Our Komainu Garden Statue by La Campania depicts a Japanese guardian dog (komainu; 狛犬). These noble statues are highly detailed and feature the traditional elements associated with these ancient temple guardians, such as sharp teeth and curly manes.
Striking and fearsome, these regal beasts can be traced all he way back to 3rd century China. "Foo dogs" originated as physical and spiritual guardians of temples, tombs, and other sacred locations.
Traditionally, Chinese guardian lion statues would be placed on either side of the outer entrance of a structure. The pair typically consisted of one male and one female dog to represent the philosophy of yin and yang. Each of the lion dogs holds something under one paw; the female rests her paw on a cub, which represents nature and the circle of life, while the male rests his on a globe, a representation of the Earth.
