How did J-Life International get started?
J-Life International was founded to introduce authentic Japanese home goods, with a focus on traditional Japanese bedding like shikibutons 敷布団, known as shikifutons at J-Life, to the American market. By collaborating with master craftsmen in Japan, we've spent over 20 years providing high-quality products that deliver a genuine Japanese living experience.

What is a traditional Japanese style bed?
A traditional Japanese-style bed (washiki shingu 和式寝具) typically consists of a shikifuton, a lightweight, foldable mattress, placed directly on a tatami mat floor, creating the authentic feel of a Japanese bedroom. Unlike Western-style beds with frames and box springs, these beds are minimalist and designed to be compact and space-efficient. The shikifuton can be easily folded and stored during the day, allowing the room to serve multiple purposes. Historically, Japanese rooms were designed to be multifunctional, with minimal furniture to create flexible spaces that could transition between living, dining, and sleeping areas. This approach reflects the traditional Japanese philosophy of maximizing efficiency and simplicity in daily life, while also capturing the essence of wabi-sabi (侘寂). Wabi-sabi is the appreciation of simplicity, imperfection, and transience, encouraging a mindful, clutter-free environment that values natural beauty and practicality. This concept aligns with the efficient use of space, emphasizing harmony and balance in the home.

What is a shikifuton, and how is it made?
A shikifuton, J-Life's version of the traditional Japanese shikibuton, is a mattress designed to offer an authentic Japanese sleep experience. Originating from Japan’s centuries-old bedding practices, the shikibuton is typically placed on a tatami mat. J-Life's shikifuton is made from high-quality materials, with a cover crafted from 100% unbleached cotton duck and filled with 100% American-grown cotton batting, offering natural breathability and comfort. The covers are custom-made in the USA, using fabric imported from Japan and stitched at our textile factory in Fall River, Massachusetts, ensuring both authenticity and craftsmanship. Many of our fabrics feature traditional Japanese motifs, such as sakura (cherry blossoms 桜) and seikai ha (ocean waves 青海波) bringing cultural richness and elegance to your home.

What is the significance of using Japanese motifs on fabric?

Japanese motifs hold significant cultural symbolism, often drawing from nature, folklore, and spiritual traditions. These designs reflect traditional values and convey meanings tied to various aspects of Japanese life, such as seasonal changes, longevity, and resilience. When applied to textiles and home decor, these motifs link contemporary design with historical and cultural narratives. Their use in fabric and interior spaces provides not only a connection to Japan’s artistic heritage but also a deeper understanding of its cultural identity.

What is the best way to maintain my shikifuton?

Ideally, a shikifuton should be aired outside under direct sunlight. However, not everyone has access to enough outdoor space or sunlight to properly air their futon. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to address this challenge:

  • Hanging your mattress is the most effective way to thoroughly ventilate it, but we understand that futons, particularly larger ones, can be cumbersome. You can use a railing—on a deck, patio, or outdoor stairs—chairs, or even furniture like a table to support your futon and raise it off the ground, whether you're airing it indoors or outdoors.
  • If you're unable to put your futon outside in direct sunlight, try positioning it near a window that gets plenty of natural light. Areas like in front of a sliding door, a bay window, or a sunroom can be great indoor spots to "sun" your futon. When the weather allows, open the windows or doors near the futon to let fresh air flow over it.

What is the importance of a tatami mat, and what are they made of?
Tatami mats are essential for creating a traditional Japanese sleeping arrangement, providing a firm yet breathable foundation for shikifutons. They enhance comfort, promote better spinal alignment, and allow for proper air circulation, which prevents moisture buildup and extends the futon’s lifespan. J-Life tatami mats are made from Japanese rush grass, filled with baked-dried rice straw for durability, and feature a moisture-resistant layer, ensuring both strength and long-lasting quality.

What is the best way to maintain my tatami mats?
To maintain your tatami mats, start by using a damp cloth to wipe up everyday spills, always going in the direction of the grain. Be sure not to oversaturate the mat. For deeper cleaning or stains, you can mix water with vinegar and apply it to a cloth, again wiping with the grain. Vacuum the mat weekly to remove dust and debris, but make sure to vacuum in the direction of the grain to protect the grass fibers. Avoid using the brush roller setting, used for cleaning carpet, as it's too harsh and can damage the mat.
